MSE 5th grade clay projects

We're in the middle of creating sculptural reliefs with 5th graders right now.  Someone up at Monte Sano stopped by and donated these mat boards with ovals cut out of them.  We had just enough for a 5th grade project - and what's more fun than crazy faces peering out from the wall? Students were given slabs of clay, a newspaper form in the shape of an oval, and their mat board.  Students learned how to sculpt faces and then painted them the next time.  Next art time, we plan to add more layers of paint - and details such as the whites of the eyes - and possibly some 3-D built up texture to our matboards.
